The retreat

A six-day return to stillness in Costa Rica's hidden rainforest.

Five nights at a colonial hacienda surrounded by 100 hectares of jungle, vanilla plantations and waterfalls. Daily yoga, meditation, three guided hikes, and meals lovingly prepared on the finca — for a circle of just eight.

The rainforest opens slowly. You’ll arrive by 4×4 through the mountains, walk along a clear river to your first waterfall, and by late afternoon land on the terrace of Hacienda Las Vainillas — a colonial boutique hotel perched above 100 hectares of jungle.

For five nights, this is home for a circle of just eight. Two yoga sessions a day, three meals from the finca, guided hikes to private waterfalls, a vanilla plantation tour, sharing circles by candlelight. Colonial beams, terracotta tiles, a 100 m² pool — and the quiet decision, every morning, to put your phone down and meet yourself instead.

Slow mornings, open afternoons, soft evenings.

The rhythm is gentle on purpose. Nothing is mandatory. The day flows around you, not the other way around.

You can do every session, or spend a whole afternoon nearby the pool. Both are right.

Day by day

Every day has its own texture — arrival, depth, silence, expansion, integration. Here's what unfolds.

Day 1 · Monday, November 30 — Arrival & Opening

  • Departure from Escazú, San José. Scenic 4×4 journey through the mountains (~2h30).
  • Welcome snack at Refugio de Vida Silvestre Juco (fresh fruit, coffee, water).
  • Easy 40-minute hike to a first waterfall. Walking partly in the river (mid-calf), bathing optional.
  • Lunch on the trail.
  • Check-in at Hacienda Las Vainillas. Free time to settle and rest.
  • Opening yoga session on the upper terrace.
  • Welcome dinner, followed by a restorative Yoga Nidra.

Day 2 · Tuesday, December 1 — Vanilla & Forest

  • Morning meditation.
  • Breakfast at the lodge.
  • Guided tour of the endemic vanilla plantation, followed by a walk to a hidden waterfall on the finca for swimming.
  • Lunch at the hacienda.
  • Afternoon yoga, followed by a sunset walk.
  • Dinner, then sharing circle.

Day 3 · Wednesday, December 2 — Las Gemelas

  • Meditation.
  • Breakfast.
  • Guided hike to Las Gemelas, the twin waterfalls at the bottom of a 200 m canyon — among the most spectacular in Costa Rica. Swimming in the natural pools.
  • Lunch on return.
  • Restorative yoga.
  • Dinner, free evening.

Day 4 · Thursday, December 3 — Canyon El Sueño

  • Meditation.
  • Breakfast.
  • Walk through the property to the El Sueño canyon (The Dream).
  • Lunch.
  • Free time: pool, hammock, journaling, optional holistic massage on request.
  • Afternoon yoga.
  • Dinner and sharing circle around the altar.

Day 5 · Friday, December 4 — Integration

  • Meditation.
  • Breakfast.
  • Long yoga and breathwork session.
  • Lunch.
  • Free afternoon: cacao tour in Mastatal village, bird watching walk, or rest by the pool.
  • Closing yoga.
  • Farewell dinner.

Day 6 · Saturday, December 5 — Closing & Return

  • Final meditation.
  • Breakfast and closing circle.
  • Check-out, departure by 4×4 to San José.
  • Arrival in San José.

A five-bedroom colonial boutique hotel built on a hilltop, with terracotta tiles, wooden beams and balconies overlooking 100 hectares of tropical forest. Rooms come with private bathrooms (hot water), ceiling fans, coffee machines and views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. A 100 m² swimming pool, a “pulpería” bar serving fresh juices and cocktails, and a restaurant focused on local, seasonal cuisine.

Questions, answered

How do I get there?

Fly into San José (SJO), Costa Rica. There are direct flights from New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas and Toronto, and we pick you up from the airport to take care of the journey from there.

Can I come on my own?

Yes, and most of our guests do. A small-group retreat is one of the easiest, safest ways to travel solo: you arrive on your own and leave with a close circle of friends. You will never feel out of place.

Is Costa Rica safe?

Very. Costa Rica has no army, a long tradition of peace, and is one of the safest countries in Latin America. We handle all transport and you are always within a small, cared-for group. Solo women travelers feel completely at home here.

Can you accommodate dietary needs?

Absolutely. Meals are vegetarian and made fresh on site. Tell us about any allergies or vegan and gluten-free needs when you book, and we will take care of it.

Is there wifi?

Yes, there is wifi at the property if you need to check in with home or work. That said, most guests find the real magic is in switching off for a few days.

What will the weather be like?

November is the tail end of Costa Rica's green season. The landscape is at its most lush and alive, rivers and waterfalls are full, and warm, bright mornings often give way to a short afternoon shower. Expect vibrant tropical green everywhere, and pack a light layer.
